Benefits
Pensions
and Benefits
Your local Post Office™ branch provides a whole host of
pensions and benefits information and payments. We can help you
with Work and Pensions benefits, health costs, medical care in
the EU, tax credits and Direct Payment of pensions and
benefits into accounts.
Direct Payment
The change to Direct Payment
From April 2003, the Government started to pay
benefits, Child Benefit and state pensions directly into accounts.
This method of payment is called Direct Payment and it will not
affect the amount of money you receive or how often you receive
it. What's more, you can still collect your cash from the Post
Office™ as usual.
Direct Payment won't affect everyone straight away; it will take
a couple of years. But by 2005 people receiving benefits and state
pensions will do so directly into an account of their choice.
If you collect any
of the following benefits or pensions, Direct Payment will apply
to you:
Attendance Allowance, Bereavement Benefits,Carer's Allowance,
Child Benefit, Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit,
Income Support, Industrial Injuries Scheme Benefits, Jobseeker's
Allowance, Maternity Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance,
state pension, War Pension, Widows Benefit.
If you already have your benefit or state pension paid into your
account this change won't affect you. If the change does affect
you, there are three types of account that will enable you to
continue withdrawing your cash, free of charge at any Post Office™
branch.
Licences
The Post Office™ can help you apply for and renew a range
of essential licences including motor vehicle licences, driving
licences, TV licences and rod fishing licences.
Motor Vehicle Licences
If you own a vehicle and use it on the road then you need a Motor
Vehicle Licence (Tax disc). These are available from selected
Post Office™ branches. To find the nearest branch offering
Motor Vehicle Licences, please use our branch locator or phone
our helpline on 08457 22
33 44. You can also apply for your Motor Vehicle
Licence by post from one of the addresses listed on the leaflet
"Registering and Licensing your Motor Vehicle" (V100),
which is available from your local Post Office™ branch.
TV licences
If you use or install a television or other TV receiving equipment
to receive or record television programme services, you need a
valid TV licence. One TV licence covers any number of TV receivers
at the single place specified in the licence. The general rule
is that a separate licence is required for each separately occupied
place.
